Your grandmother waxed her thread when she hand stitched and you should too. It takes a few seconds to draw the thread over the beeswax through the little slits in this clear plastic holder.
Once will do it. Then pinch your thumb and index finger together and run the thread between them to remove any excess wax.
Your thread will be stronger, it will tangle less often, and it won't get ratty as fast as "plain" thread. It won't make your fingers slippery either. And, if you're eating fried chicken while you're hand piecing you can safely lick your fingers. (Just don't come over and sew on my quilt.)
